Summer conjures up images of braais and melting ice creams, swimming parties and festive fun.
The last thing you want is to miss out on this because of injury or illness. Keep yourself and your loved ones safe as the summer holidays beckon by avoiding these risks:
- Not being able to swim is your number one risk factor. Go for lessons, teach your children to swim, and hammer in the rules of swimming in the pool or sea: such as no dunking, depths allowed, etc.
- 88% of people who drowned in boating accidents were not wearing life jackets. No matter how good a swimmer you are, always wear a life jacket when boating.
- Alcohol and water sports do not mix well. Stay with non-alcoholic beverages while playing in the water to reduce your risk of drowning
Despite knowing better, more than a third of the population admitted to being sunburnt in the last year. Those with light skins and those taking certain medication are at greater risk. However, anyone can get burned by the sun – regardless of skin tone.
Apply sunscreen every morning. Reapply as needed. Avoid spending time in the sun between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Invest in a decent hat, and always keep it with you.
As the temperatures rise, so foodborne bacteria proliferate. Avoid food poisoning by:
- Cooking meat thoroughly,
- Separating foodstuffs to prevent cross-contamination, and
- Throwing away food which has been out of the fridge for more than two hours.
