Gap Cover: The Short-Term Insurance That You Absolutely Need Over and Above Your Medical Aid

Person completing gap cover short term insurance form

Gap cover short term insurance is an important consideration for anyone who values their health. As Josh Billings once said, “Health is like money. We never have a true idea of its value until we lose it.” Gap cover can help ensure that you have sufficient cover to get the healthcare you deserve.

Gap Cover: The Short Term Healthcare Insurance You Didn’t Know You Need

Gap cover options provide benefits for members and their dependants who are covered by a registered medical aid scheme. While you can only be on two different medical aid policies and one Gap Cover Policy if you are a legally married or common-law couple, gap cover is not a substitute for medical aid scheme membership.

Gap cover covers procedures such as all emergency procedures, sterilisations, vasectomies, tonsillectomies, appendectomies, gall bladder removal, procedures and conditions not specifically excluded where a medical aid has failed to meet its full obligation in this regard, and Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs) where a medical aid has failed to meet its full obligations.

TRA Gap Cover Includes Procedures Such As:

  • All emergency procedures
  • Sterilisations
  • Vasectomies
  • Tonsillectomies
  • Appendectomies
  • Gall bladder removal

There is no entry age limit, but there is an aggregate Gap Cover annual limit of R150 000 per insured person per annum. Different options are available to cater to different health needs and budgets, including entry level, comprehensive, and high-end options.

How Gap Cover in South Africa Works:

Gap cover works by providing cover for the shortfall between what medical schemes are willing to pay and the ever-increasing rates charged by medical professionals. This shortfall can result in members experiencing increasing out-of-pocket payments, even with top-of-the-range medical scheme options. Gap cover is an important market that continues to grow, especially since new regulations have cleared up uncertainty. So, consider gap cover short term insurance to ensure that you have sufficient cover to get the healthcare you deserve.
