World NET Cancer Awareness Day

World NET Cancer Awareness Day

Today is World NET Cancer Awareness Day! It’s a day for raising the awareness of neuroendocrine cancers around the world.

What are Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs)?

This is an umbrella term for a group of unusual cancers which develop from cells in the diffuse endocrine system. They are mostly found in the lung and gastrointestinal system but can form in other parts of the body such as the pancreas and ovaries too.

What are the symptoms:

These symptoms can vary. It all depends on the location and the biological properties. Take a look at some of the symptoms below:

Intestinal Carcinoid:

• Bowel obstruction • Diarrhea • Abdominal pain • Wheezing

Bronchial Carcinoid

• Wheezing • Cough • Bloody sputum

Pancreatic NET

• Epigastric pain • Chronic ulcer disease • Intermittent low blood sugar • Rash • Diabetes • Diarrhea

Diagnosis:

The diagnoses of NET cancer can be difficult. Due to the symptoms sometimes being vague and non-specific it can take, on average, 3-7 years to diagnose. If NET cancers are diagnosed early, they can be cured with surgery. However, if it is only diagnosed at a later stage, it can spread to other areas of the body.

Treatment options:

These options would depend on the location and size of the tumor. It would also depend on whether or not the cancer has spread and the patient’s overall health. A multidisciplinary team will assess you and will have to come up with a treatment plan based on you as an individual.
