As South Africans, we are lucky to live in a truly rainbow nation. This term, which refers to our country’s multicultural diversity and heritage, was coined by the former Archbishop, Desmond Tutu.
About Heritage Day
Heritage Day was first observed in 1996 as a celebration of the newly formed democracy.
Nelson Mandela shared, “When our first democratically elected government decided to make it one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied cultural inheritance has a profound power to help build our new nation.“
Heritage Day occurs on September 24th each year. It gives us an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate our heritage, our history, our beautiful land, and what it means to be a South African.
Understanding Your Heritage
Your heritage is intricate, woven from the traditions, customs, and beliefs passed down to you from generations of ancestors, shaping your identity. It encompasses the rich and diverse cultural practices inherited from your parents, family, and the community in which you were raised.
As someone born in South Africa, you are part of a collective national identity, sharing in the heritage of the African continent.
South Africa’s Natural Heritage
The natural heritage of South Africa is a treasure trove of landscapes and natural resources that contribute to the country’s unique and breathtaking sites. Our diverse regions each tell their own story.
Some beautiful, proudly South African sites include:
- Table Mountain and the Western Cape’s dramatic coastlines
- The Drakensberg mountain range
- White sandy shorelines across the Garden Route
- The vast savannas with their golden grasslands
- The Karoo semi-desert region, with its unique beauty
- Bushveld areas are rich with wildlife
- The Midlands, with rolling hills and fertile valleys
Each region hosts its own biodiversity, making South Africa’s natural world an integral part of our heritage.
How We Celebrate
We celebrate vibrantly and wholesomely, encompassing anything that holds historical, artistic, or scientific significance.
- Traditional music, dance, and visual arts
- Tangible monuments and sculptures that narrate stories of the past
- Artistic expressions that reflect the values and aspirations of our society
- Living traditions that continue to evolve
- Family and friends gathering for braais and shared meals
The Rainbow Nation
South Africa’s cultural richness is perhaps best reflected in our 11 official languages, each carrying their own unique traditions, stories, and worldview. From isiZulu and isiXhosa to Afrikaans and English, Sesotho and Setswana, each language represents centuries of cultural development and community heritage.
Our diverse cultural communities have contributed distinct elements to our national identity. Traditional healing practices blend with modern medicine, indigenous architectural styles inspire contemporary design, and ancient storytelling traditions find new expression in modern literature and film. Religious practices from Christianity to Islam, Hinduism to traditional African spirituality, coexist and sometimes beautifully interweave.
Each community’s contribution strengthens the whole, creating a uniquely South African identity that celebrates both diversity and unity.
Sports Heritage
Sport has become a powerful thread in South Africa’s modern heritage, uniting communities across all backgrounds in shared passion and pride. The Springboks’ Rugby World Cup victories in 1995, 2007, and 2019 created moments of national unity that transcended traditional divisions, while our cricket and soccer teams continue to inspire millions.
Beyond professional sport, the tradition of weekend sports clubs, school competitions, and community tournaments forms part of our celebrations.
These sporting traditions are now part of our heritage – passed down from parents to children, creating new memories while honouring the legacy of those who came before.
