Here’s a detailed look at the travel benefit you are eligible for when you sign up for one of Total Risk Administrators’ (TRA) Gap Cover Policies:
Firstly, Do You Qualify?
To access the benefits, you are required to meet the following criteria:
- Be a resident of South Africa travelling to another country
- Be under 71 years of age
- Travel for business or holiday purposes (not for permanent/temporary residency or work)
- Stay abroad for no more than 180 consecutive days
- Be healthy, fit, and not travelling against medical advice
- Purchase the policy before departure

What’s Covered, What’s Not
Covered: Emergency Medical Expenses
Our basic travel insurance provides medical emergency cover for inpatient and outpatient medical treatment during a medical emergency.
Benefits include, but are not limited to:
- Medical Evacuation, Repatriation or Transportation to a Medical Centre: Actual expense covered when arranged by Hepstar Financial Services
- Personal Accident Cover: Death: R25 000 / Permanent Disability: up to R25 000
- Theft or Accidental Damage during trip: R5 000 / Single item limit: R1 000
- Theft, Damage or loss by Airline: R5 000 / Single item limit: R1 500
- Baggage Delay (more than 4 hours): R500
- Baggage Delay (more than 24 hours): R1 000
Not Covered: Take Note Of Important Exclusions
Exclusions include, but are not limited to:
- Expenses exceeding R20,000 which have not been authorised by Us in advance.
- Treatment which, based on medical opinion, can reasonably be delayed until you return to your Home Country.
- Adventure Sports and/or Hazardous Activities that are not on the approved list in the Policy Wording.
- Terminal prognosis or cancer of any kind.
- Pregnancy, childbirth, and related conditions after the 26th week of pregnancy.
- The following expenses, if they relate to a Pre-existing Medical Condition:
- Outpatient treatment.
- Dental treatment.
- Treatment to stabilise or regulate a chronic or recurring condition.
- Treatment if you are hospitalised for less than 48 hours, or treatment received after 30 days from initial treatment.
IMPORTANT: For medical expenses exceeding R20,000, you MUST contact Europ Assistance at +27 (0)11 991 8731 or WhatsApp +27 83 676 0411 BEFORE receiving treatment, or coverage will be limited to R20,000.
Top-Up Coverage Options For Additional Cover
For more comprehensive cover, TRA offers a Travel Benefit Top-Up Plan option.
The top-up plan includes, but is not limited to:
Postponement cover, cancellation cover and curtailment cover include a reimbursement up to R50,000 for listed reasons at reasonable costs, such as:
- Visa denial (sub-limit: R25,000) – essential for Schengen visa applications
- Unexpected sudden illness or death of a close relative/travel companion
- Damage or burglary at your home exceeding R50,000
Note: If you need to cancel your holiday or business travel due to a covered event, we will reimburse valid expenses, subject to the policy terms. This protection gives travellers peace of mind when booking their trip around the world.
2. Baggage and Personal Possessions
Coverage for loss, theft, or damage up to R30 000:
- Single item limit: R5,000
- Replacement of essential items for delays over 24 hours: R2,000
3. Flight Delays and Missed Connections
Note: Flight delay compensation is only available with top-up coverage, not basic coverage.
- Compensation for delays over 4 hours: R1,000 (top-up coverage only)
- An alternative economy return travel ticket covers the costs of missed connections due to flight delays
