Medical aid schemes often leave a gap (known as medical shortfalls) between what the medical aid pays and the actual cost of the treatments. This gap can arise from in-hospital procedures, which are capped at a medical aid tariff (the amount the medical aid covers) or co-payments imposed by your medical aid.
Gap cover is a health insurance product designed to bridge this gap, ensuring you, or your family, are not left out of pocket for essential medical care.
Each TRA Gap Cover plan is subject to an annual aggregate limit— this is the maximum amount a Gap Cover plan can pay out per insured person per annum. In addition to our Gap Cover products, TRA offers complementary benefits with our plans not subject to this limit.

A Closer Look at How Gap Cover Works
When your medical aid pays only a portion of your medical bills for authorised in-hospital procedures or certain out-of-hospital treatments, gap cover steps in to settle the remaining shortfall. Unlike a substitute for medical scheme membership, gap cover works alongside your registered medical aid scheme to protect you from unexpected expenses.
Whether it’s covering sub-limits, specialist consultations, or co-payments, gap cover ensures you’re not left with a significant medical bill you will need to pay out of your pocket.
