Who Can Access The Travel Benefit?

You are only eligible for benefits if:

  • You are named as a policyholder on a TRA Gap Cover policy on the Policy Schedule;
  • You are a resident of South Africa travelling to another country;
  • You are under the age of 71 years;
  • You are travelling for business or leisure purposes, not with the intention to permanently or temporarily reside or take up work in another country;
  • You are travelling no more than 180 consecutive days;
  • You are healthy and fit to travel and not travelling against the advice of a Medical Practitioner.

TRA Travel Policy Overview

This is a concise overview of the TRA’s travel insurance policy’s benefits, conditions and exclusions:

Emergency Medical Expenses:

  • Covers inpatient and outpatient treatment over R10,000 (contact assistance number required for treatment above this amount).
  • Excludes pre-existing conditions, accidents under certain conditions (e.g., motorbike accident without a valid motorcycle license), non-compliance with medical advice, influence of alcohol/drugs, pregnancy-related issues after 26 weeks, and lack of recommended vaccinations.

COVID-19 Medical Extension:

  • Includes coverage for treatment and testing of COVID-19 during the trip, accommodation for up to 14 days during compulsory medical quarantine, and costs for changing flight tickets post-quarantine.
  • Requires a COVID-19 vaccination certificate or negative test for claims.

Baggage and Personal Possessions:

  • Covers loss, theft, or damage
  • Conditions and exclusions include damage to screens, consumables, aesthetic damage, and valuables not safely stored.

Personal Accident:

  • Excludes coverage if participating in hazardous activities, adventure sports, or manual work.

General Exclusions:

  • Travel against medical advice, for medical treatment, to countries engaged in war, under sanctions, or experiencing epidemic/pandemic events (excluding certain COVID-19-related events in specific plans).

Top-Up Your Policy:

One of the significant advantages of travel gap insurance, such as that of TRA, is the customisation it provides travellers. 

The TRA Travel Benefit Top-Up Plan offers additional coverage compared to the travel benefit included in the Gap Cover.

The top-up plan includes, but is not limited to:

Emergency Medical Expenses:

  • Covers pre-existing conditions under certain conditions, treatment for specific medical conditions with sub-limits, and approved adventure sports.
  • Excludes outpatient treatment for pre-existing conditions.

Cancellation, Curtailment, and Postponement:

  • Covers visa denial, unexpected illness or death, terrorist incidents, retrenchment, quarantine, home damage, and more.
  • Excludes, unless specified, pre-existing conditions, travel supplier insolvency, government restrictions, and COVID-19-related events.

COVID-19 Extensions:

  • Covers death from COVID-19, contracting COVID-19 before departure, travel warnings, compulsory quarantine, and changing flights due to travel restrictions.

Travel Delay and Missed Connection:

  • Covers delays and missed connections for specific reasons
  • Excludes COVID-19-related reasons.

Natural Disaster:

  • Covers alternative accommodation for destroyed prepaid accommodation.
