What Is TRA’s Basic Cover 300?

Basic Cover 300 is TRA’s entry-level gap cover policy available at only R99 for individuals and R180 for families.

This gap cover product works alongside your registered medical aid, covering the difference between what your medical aid pays and what private healthcare providers charge for in-hospital procedures, specialist consultations, and certain treatments.

It’s important to note that Gap Cover is not a substitute for medical aid, but rather a supplementary health insurance product for medical aid members.

  • Above tariff cover: Covers up to 300% of medical scheme tariff for in-hospital shortfalls (up to the aggregate annual limit: R219,845 per insured person per annum)
  • Casualty cover: Emergency visits to casualty units, up to R3,465 per policy per annum
  • Oncology gap benefit: Covers approved oncology treatment shortfalls
  • Accidental death cover: R7,350 for main member/spouse, R4,200 for dependants (death by violent, external, or visible means)
  • Policy extender: Pays your gap cover premiums for 12 months after main policyholder’s death
  • Private ward benefit: Covers private ward fees for up to 3 days per hospital stay (subject to sub-limits)
  • Maternity follow-up consultations: Covers postnatal follow-up visits
  • Specialist consultation shortfalls: Covers shortfalls for specialist consultations
  • Internal prostheses and MRI/CT/PET scans: Covered up to annual limits
  • Access to TRA Assist: Home Drive (Uber), Panic Button, Medical Health & Trauma Counselling, Roadside Security Assistance

Waiting Periods & Limits

  • No general waiting period (TRA does not apply a standard 3-month waiting period)
  • Specific waiting periods: 10 months for joint replacement, pregnancy, oncology; 6 months for pre-existing conditions; 9 months for first-time cancer diagnosis
  • Aggregate annual limit: R219,845 per insured person per annum
  • Sub-limits apply to certain procedures (see official policy documents for details)

Who Qualifies for Basic Cover 300?

  • Members of registered medical aid schemes (not health insurance or primary care products)
  • No entry age limit; premiums are higher for those over 65, starting at R360p/m
  • Cover extends to spouse and dependants who are on one registered medical aid policy together. Members can be married/proven common law partners on different medical aids.

What’s Not Covered

  • Routine GP visits
  • Cosmetic procedures
  • Out-of-hospital dental treatments
  • Mental health disorders
  • Anything not partially paid by your medical aid.
