World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day

World AIDs day is celebrated on the 1st of December every year. It is a day for people to unite and fight against HIV, Show support to individuals who are living with HIV and commemorate those who have died from the illness. It was the first ever Global Health Day founded in 1988. The theme for 2018 is “Know your Status”. The campaign is a call to action to all South Africans to take responsibility for their health and wellness.

Importance of World AIDS Day:

More than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.

Despite there being so much knowledge on the disease, there is still a massive increase in individuals being diagnosed with the disease. That is why it is important to create awareness about the disease. It reminds the public and government that HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education.

What to do on World AIDS Day:

The most common thing which individuals do is purchase a Red HIV Awareness ribbon on the day. This is done as a way to create awareness as well as a fundraising effort to raise money.
