Why do I need medical aid?

One of the most stressful times in life is finding yourself or a loved one in hospital, only to realise that you can’t afford to cover the hefty medical costs. Having medical aid is probably one of the most important financial costs that you have to have every month to ensure that you and your family are protected and covered.

Why is it important to have medical aid?

Just like having home and home contents insurance to protect your most prized possessions, it would make sense to “insure” yourself and your family members too. At some point in life, you will need to have some form of medical procedure, doctor visit, dental visit, etc. and having a plan in place helps you to avoid the costs of seeking a medical professional, which will help you out in the long run.

Depending on the medical aid plan that you are on, you can claim things like in-hospital treatments, day-to-day expenses like GP visits, dental treatment or medication, as well as screening benefits for certain diseases. There are numerous Medical aid providers out there who offer various products to suit your budget and your daily needs. With a medical aid scheme, you can access some of the best hospitals and medical care in the world. Please note that not all medical aid schemes are the same and some ask you to refer to a network doctor or hospital in times of need. Traumatic events can happen at any stage in life and those costs associated can run into the hundreds of thousands.

Before you decide to start a medical aid, make sure to speak to the right people and do comparisons to assess the type of cover you would need for you and/or your family. When times are tough, try to consider not cancelling your medical aid plan. It may cost you less in the short term but just remember, accidents happen every day and you don’t want to get stuck fitting the bill. And for those procedures that are not covered 100% by your medical aid – a Gap Cover plan will help with the shortfall.
